What will you be doing?

B.W. Furlong & Associates is looking to fill the role of Overnight Technician. This position is ideal for someone who has a formal education/certification as a veterinary technician, has worked as a vet tech or vet assistant either in small or large animal practice, or has extensive experience providing medical care for horses in a barn setting. The role provides exposure to all facets of overnight treatments within the hospital related to: emergency care, general practice, internal medicine, reproduction, imaging, rehabilitation, and laboratory services. Overnight Technicians work with our doctors, with other technicians, and independently, to perform treatments, procedures, and services.

In addition to having exceptional horsemanship skills, candidates will be expected to have a strong baseline of technical skills and vocabulary, such as administering medications, running fluids, updating doctors with patient status (vital parameters, etc), and processing lab work. Those that do not have those skills, but demonstrate an ability to learn and retain information quickly, are also gladly considered. The ideal candidate will be excited by learning new skills and doing something different every day, and will have a passion for providing world class care for our patients and clients. This is a full time position that utilizes “swing shifts”, equating to three 12 hour shifts one week followed by four 12 hour shifts the next week. Saturday overnights are the 4th night that alternates between shifts which are as follows: Sun/Mon/Tues and Wed/Thurs/Fri from 7:30pm to 8:00am. The current available shift is Wednesday/Thursday/Friday nights with alternating Saturdays. Additional hours, including on-call shifts or extra shifts, may be available depending on the needs of the hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Provide treatments for hospital cases, including, but not limited to, preparing and administering oral and IV medications, performing physical exams, placing IV catheters, running fluids, changing bandages and assisting with diagnostics.
  • Assist veterinarians with any emergency procedures.
  • Care for patients, such as feeding and mucking out
  • Assist with after-hours emergency admissions
  • Record patient treatments and observations in medical records
  • Monitor mares & foals (during breeding season), including assisting with foaling, nursing, milking the mares, and handling newborns
  • Adhere to all biosecurity protocols, such as correct use of protective gear, proper cleaning and sterilization of instruments and equipment, and appropriate disposal of materials and inventory
  • Communicate effectively with veterinarians regarding patient status as instructed
  • Sterilize all instruments and equipment
  • Run and properly document in-house labs as necessary
  • Admit and prep all other samples for testing and analysis
  • When necessary, assist with emergency surgeries (eligibility to be determined by surgical staff) – once deemed eligible, may participate as an on-call surgical technician to cover other shifts (additional income and growth opportunity)
  • Additional responsibilities as needed 

Qualifications

  • Excellent horse-handling skills are mandatory, including handling of fractious horses, ability to jog horses in hand, and proficiency in lunging horses
  • An outstanding team attitude, work ethic, and desire to learn
  • Experience working as a technician or veterinary assistant in an equine hospital is strongly preferred, although we are willing to train someone with an extensive non medical horse background
  • Post high-school education in equine studies or veterinary technician license (LVT) is preferred
  • Good time management and multitasking skills
  • Knowledge of biosecurity and isolation protocols a plus
  • Ability to work independently
  • Capable of handling patient emergency situations
  • Capable of heavy lifting, including hay bales, feed bags, and muck buckets
